Agreeing with the Holy Spirit’s Agenda from the Prayer of Jesus
The Lord’s Prayer is actually John 17.
The traditional “Lord’s Prayer” might be more accurately called - “The Disciples Prayer” or “The King’s Commissioned Prayer”.
Like last week we want to focus on the specific part of the prayer for us in verses John 17:20-23.
John 17:20-23 (ESV)
20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word,
21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one,
23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.
Four verses with glorious implications (John 17):
vs. 20: Jesus prays for every believer in Church History.
vs. 21: His prayer is for us to be one as He and the Father are one and that our dwelling in Them would lead to an unbelieving world believing in Jesus as the sent One from God.
vs. 22: The glory Jesus gives will be given to these future believers to lead to Trinitarian unity. What is that glory? I believe it is the Holy Spirit because of John 7.
vs.23: Jesus’ indwelling by the Spirit and the Father’s indwelling in Jesus will lead to perfect unity in the Church that convinces the world that Jesus is the sent One and that they are loved by the Father just as Jesus is loved.
John 7:37-39 (ESV)
37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.
38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”
39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
